Distinguished Mr. TUOMAS and Mr.HARRI，ladies and gentlemen，Good morning!

春回大地，万象更新。我们聚集在一起，举行广州大学国际教育学院留学生班开学典礼。在此，我代表广州大学国际教育学院，对来自芬兰的新同学表示最热烈的欢迎！对担任留学生课程教学任务的教师表示衷心的感谢！

Spring comes to the earth again, and all things look fresh and gay. Today we get together and hold the opening ceremony for the new overseas students of International Education college of Guangzhou University. Now, on behalf of the International Education college, I will extend the warmest welcome to the new students from Finland and express the most heartfelt thanks to the teachers who will take on the courses.

广州大学是一所综合性大学，有50余年的办学历史。通过全校师生的共同努力，学校发展迅速，综合实力显著增强，有硕士、博士授予权，各类学术指标在全国地方高校的排名持续上升，教学质量明显提高，在国家教育部组织的本科教学水平评估中获得了“优秀”，已经列入全国高校的先进行列。学校在国家重点实验室等方面也取得重大突破，竞争力大大增强，学校的发展走上了一个全新的历程。

Guangzhou University is a comprehensive university with a history of over 50 years. Through the whole school’s effort, the university develops rapidly with significantly increasing comprehensive strength. It has been authorized to have master degree and PHD studies. Among the national universities, our school gets better and better achievement on the billboard in all kinds of academic index. Meanwhile, the quality of teaching has been significantly improved. We have reached the level of "excellence" in the Undergraduate Teaching Evaluation which is organized by National Ministry of Education and have earned the top rank of nationwide colleges and universities. The National Key Laboratory of the university has also achieved a major breakthrough so that the competitiveness has been greatly enhanced. The development of the university has stepped on a new stage.

广州大学的对外汉语教学很有特色，已取得硕士学位授予权，有经验丰富的对外汉语教学师资队伍，在座的各位汉语教师很优秀。我们有自己的专利产品，

易洪川教授发明了易五码快速汉字查字法。这种查字法很有创意，将汉字作为图形来编码，易学好懂，即使从来没有学过汉字的人，也可以根据汉字的形状和图形在字典中查出汉字的音、形、义，给汉字的教与学带来了极大的方便。国家汉语推广委员会对此很感兴趣，准备在国内外进行介绍和传播。目前很多国家的汉语教学机构纷纷前来洽谈合作。今天到会的李颖老师只通过几个小时的自学很快就掌握了这种查字法。来自意大利的留学生和韩国的留学生已经熟练地掌握了这种方法。希望同学们也好好学习。

Teaching Chinese as a foreign language of GuangzhouUniversity is very characteristic. The university has been granted the right to a master's degree, so it possesses a team of teachers with rich experience in teaching Chinese as a foreign language. We also have our patented products, a kind of indexing method of Chinese characters named as Yi-wuma which is invented by Professor Yi- Hongcheon. This indexing method is very creative through coding the Chinese characters as graphics which can help to make learners easy to learn Chinese, even for those who have never known what Chinese is also can find the pronunciation, the shape and the meaning of Chinese characters in accordance with the graph and the shape of the characters. This method has brought Chinese teaching great convenience. The Committee of the Promotion of Chinese Overseas shows great interest in it, and plans to introduce and spread this method nationwide. The present teacher, Ms. Li Ying has mastered this indexing method through self-study by only several hours. The oversea students from Italy and Korea also have been able to use this method proficiently. I hope you will study hard at it, too.

广州大学的生活设施比较完善，其中商业中心最有特色，饮食购物非常方便，其他大学的大学生们羡慕不已，经常光顾我们广州大学的商业中心。学校领导高度重视国际教育，对国际教育学院的发展给予了全方位的大力支持，为留学生的学习和生活创造了诸多便利的条件。

Guangzhou University offers good living facilities, in particular, the unique business center caters to all customers and brings great convenience, which makes the students from other Universities feel envy. The managers of our university attach great importance to the development of the InternationalEducationCollege and give strong support in a wide range. They have created favorable condition for overseas students’ study and life.

如何度过在广州大学的美好学习时光，这是很多同学需要思考和实践的，对于这个问题，我想对同学们提几点建议和希望：首先，希望同学们树立信心，坚信通过扎实地学习必将在学业上收获硕果；二是希望同学们充分利用有利的学习条件、刻苦学习，只要刻苦、努力，没有什么事是办不到的，The things impossible today may be possible tomorrow；三是希望同学们入乡随俗，严格遵守中国的法律法规和广州大学的规章制度；四是希望同学们尽快适应新的学生生活环境，广交朋友，加强与中国学生的友好交流，更好地促进中芬文化的传播与互动。

How to spend the time in GuangzhouUniversity is a very important problem. Students need to think about it and put it into practice. Some advice about it is raised as followed: First of all, you should establish confidence and firmly believe that you will achieve a good result through hard study; secondly, you should take full advantage of favorable conditions to study. The things impossible today may be possible tomorrow; Thirdly, you are required to strictly comply with Chinese and university laws and regulations. Forthly, you have to adapt to the new environment of school life as soon as possible, just as an old saying “do in Rome as Rome does”. You will make friends, and strengthen friendly exchanges with Chinese students to better promote the cultural spread and communication between China and Finland .

同学们，在多年的办学实践中，广州大学形成了“严谨求实、克难求进、创新求变、包容求通”的广大精神，希望你们也能继承这种精神，好好学习，友好相处，和广州大学的学子一起，建立中芬文化交流的友谊桥梁。

Ladies and gentleman, during these years, GuangzhouUniversity has formed its unique spirit from the work and practice. It is “restrained for truth, triumph over difficulties for advancement, innovation for change, and accommodating for exchange”. I hope you can also inherit this spirit to study hard, get well along with others, and bridge the culture exchange and friendship between China and Finland together with the students of GuangzhouUniversity.
