Chang Xiangyang, Ph.D.

Dean of the School of International Education(Wesleyan College), Guangzhou University

Dr. Chang is a professor, doctoral supervisor, expert with special allowance of the State Council and selected as an outstanding expert in Guangzhou by the Ministry of Education "New Century Excellent Talent Support Program". He served as the general secretary of the Party Branch (2004-2011), dean (2011-2017) and secretary of the Party Committee (2017-2021) of the School of Environmental Science and Engineering of Guangzhou University; and dean of the School of International Education(Wesleyan College) of Guangzhou University from January 2021.

Dr. Chang’s main research fields include environmental education, solid waste management, sponge city and urban sustainable development, and environmental geochemistry.

Dr. Chang obtained a Bachelor of Science degree from the Department of Geology of Northwestern University in 1988, a Master of Science and Ph.D. degree from the Institute of Geochemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1991 and 2001. He was a visiting scholar at Macquarie University and CSIRO in Australia from 2007 to 2008 and traveled to the United States, Australia, Norway, Canada, Sweden, Finland, Italy, Spain, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan to participate in academic visits and exchange activities. From 1991 to 2002, he worked at the Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and was transferred to Guangzhou University in June 2002. He was promoted to research professor in 2003 and transferred to professor in 2005. He is also a visiting researcher and doctoral supervisor at the Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Dr. Chang is concurrently serving as executive director of the Environmental Philosophy Professional Committee of the Chinese Society of Dialectics of Nature; executive director of the Environmental Ethics Research Society of the Chinese Society of Ethics; member of the Environmental Geology and Geochemistry Professional Committee of the Chinese Society of Mineralogy, Petrology and Geochemistry; member of the Standing Committee of the Guangzhou Science and Technology Association, chairman of Guangzhou Environmental Education Society ; chairman of the Supervisory Committee of the Guangzhou Society of Environmental Sciences; director of the Guangzhou Municipal Waste Disposal Public Consultation and Supervision Committee; vice chairman of the Guangdong Enterprise Sustainable Development Association; executive director of the Guangdong Sustainable Development Association; executive director of the Guangdong Soil Society; Executive Director of Guangzhou Overseas Returned Scholars Association; environmental protection consultant of the Standing Committee of the 12th and 13th People's Congress of Guangdong Province; 3rd and 4th decision-making consultant of the People's Government of Guangzhou Municipality; discipline reviewer of the 6th Degree Committee of Guangdong Province Group members; and the second environmental resources trial consultant expert of the Guangdong Provincial Court. 

Dr. Chang in 1999 won the second prize of the Guangdong Provincial Natural Science Award(ranking the second). In 2000, he enjoyed the special allowance of the State Council. In 2004, he was selected as one of the third group in “Thousand-Hundred- Ten Project ” in universities and colleges in Guangdong Province level. He was awarded the title of “Excellent Expert of the City” and selected in the “New Century Excellent Talents Support Program” of the Ministry of Education in 2007 and as an excellent teacher of Guangzhou in 2013.

Dr. Chang has presided over and completed more than 30 scientific research projects at or above the provincial and ministerial levels, including five National Natural Science Foundation projects, National 973 project theme topics, climbing project topics, and key projects of the Ministry of Education. He has published more than 200 research papers which include more than 40 first author and corresponding author with two co-authored monographs.
